Community Service Day at the Civic Building
On October 22, the Montgomery County Volunteer Center hosted the annual a Community Service Day was held in the Silver Spring Civic Building. During this event various community programs were their presenting workshops and activities to the Silver Spring community. One great activity that was offered was AALead’s creating cancer ribbons. In addition, Gandhi Brigade organized a special workshop to talk about the youth curfew. We had fun activities going on to get the people energized during the discussion. The community had negative and positive reactions about the youth curfew. This discussion process was important to be conducted so that we could get our community to know what is really going on with the laws and regulation that are processed in the community.

GBN Covers the Youth Town Hall Meeting
On October 12 the Montgomery Country Council members held a youth town hall meeting to hear the youth voice their concerns about issues in their community. One of my most memorable moments at the youth town hall meeting was to hear the community complain about how they feel about the new curfew law being passed in Montgomery County. The general youth do not approve of this curfew because it will take away their free time to hang out with friends and family members.

The Rights of Butterflies
The Rights of Butterflies was conceived and directed by Laura Moya, a Montgomery College student, who approached the Gandhi Brigade to help in the production of the film. Her vision was to focus on the story of Katya, a hard working student who is involved in her community, to expose the difficulties that an undocumented student has in continuing their college education. During the summer of 2011, she worked with Laurel Gwizdak, a professional filmmaker, and a team of Gandhi Brigade youth to realize this project.
Synopsis
GB Promoters Gear Up for New Programs
On Thursday, 13 young people came and signed up to become Promoters: the core of Gandhi Brigade youth that represents the organization in the community. The event, initially scheduled to be an hour, soon grew in length as the young people played “Star Power”: an activity that introduces young people to the nuances of power and how easily one can be corrupted by its allure. After this activity, the young people, with a fresh view on the effects of unequally distributed power, signed up to participate in the campaign of their choice. This year, Gandhi Brigade's campaigns will address two key community issues: immigration and the proposed curfew legislation. Please continue to visit the Gandhi Brigade website regularly for updates on these campaigns.
